Noble patrons were demanding an impersonal, but tuneful and elegant music. Musicians moved away from the heavily ornamented Baroque styles and embraced a clean, uncluttered style they thought reminiscent of Classical Greek art. At the same time these events were taking place, a music of great elegance, refinement, and beauty was being created by resident composers in the courts of European noblemen. Some of the important historical events of this period include Benjamin Franklin’s discoveries of electricity, the emergence of factories using water and steam powered machinery, Napoleon’s ultimate defeat at Waterloo, the first steamship crossing of the Atlantic, the discovery of medical vaccination, and the invention of the cotton gin. Classical Period music was the “swan song” of autocratic powers among most European nobles, and it was the era that gave birth to the great democracies of the New World. During this time three great revolutions took place: the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution. The Classical Era was the final historical period of the “patronage system” in which musicians worked as servants to powerful noblemen. But the Classical Period (1750-1825) was just such a time. He exhibited tuneful melodic pieces, and will further be known for his delightful pieces.It is ironic that art music in the royal courts of Europe reached a peak of creative expression during the final period in which monarchs in many European countries wielded absolute power. In short, Franz Joseph Haydn was a popular composer of the Classical Period. Overall, “Serenade” by Franz Joseph Haydn, portrays many characteristics of the Classical Period, and further exhibit’s the hard work Haydn put into his work. “Serenade”, creates a spring atmosphere, and further allows the listener to feel the urge to go gardening. This specific piece composed by Franz Joseph Haydn is rejuvenating. The listener experiences many characteristics of the Classical Period throughout this piece. Overall, “Serenade” is an easy to remember piece. “Serenade” can be considered chamber music because it consists of a string quartet and could be designed for intimate performances, such as a castle. Lastly, because Franz Joseph Haydn performed many of his pieces at the Esterházy castle, his work can be known as Classical Chamber Music. Due to the string quartet, an easy and tuneful melody is created. At approximately 2:50-3:00 minutes, these contrasting dynamics are heard. Throughout the piece, the listener experiences the sounds of crescendo and decrescendo dynamics. At about twenty to thirty seconds in the piece, this tuneful rhythm is experienced. This particular piece is homophonic due to the variety of textures. To represent Franz Joseph Haydn’s work, the piece that was chosen is, “Serenade.” In contrast to Franz’s “surprise” pieces, “Serenade” is more of a pleasure to listen to rather than a shock. Overall, Franz Joseph Haydn lived an average life, but will forever be known for his symphonies, oratorios, and string quartets. Franz continued his concentration on his work, and came out to be financially successful. After leaving the castle, Franz Haydn scoped out the musical aspects of England and accepted Beethoven as a pupil. Haydn performed two concerts and two operas weekly at the Esterházy castle. The Esterházy family provided Franz Joseph Haydn nearly thirty years of work, and continued his musical interests. Once Franz Haydn grew older, he became a worker for Prince Paul Esterházy. Stephens to became a choirboy, and further began his musical training. At a young age, Franz recognized his fascination with music. Franz Haydn was born in 1732, in Austria, Germany. For the Classical Period listening experience, the composer that was chosen is Franz Joseph Haydn.
